Original Chikanobu (1838 - 1912) Japanese Woodblock Print
Imperial Lineage, 1878

Triptych

Terrific group portrait showing some of the Imperial lineage of Japan. The Meiji Emperor sits on a plush green chair trimmed with fringe at upper left, wearing a military dress uniform and hat trimmed with feathers. The Meiji Empress sits across from him, with a vase of peonies and cherry blossoms between them, on a globe on the floor. Below him, a young prince sits at a cloth-covered table with a pencil in one hand, a book open before him. He wears Western dress, including a black coat over a red vest and plaid shirt, and a black hat. An interesting subject. Includes embossing on the feathers and faint embossing on the Empress's white kimono collar and trim.
