Flowers of Japan - Gekko's "Flowers of Japan" series features a variety of subjects beyond flowers, including historical figures and events, and pastimes or daily activities. These charming designs are rendered in Gekko's painterly style, which includes attractive calligraphic line work with a loose, sketch-like quality. Prints were published between 1892 and 1900, and many subjects include deluxe publishing techniques such as burnishing, embossing, or mica. These attractive Meiji era designs are a nice choice to collect or display.
 
The Exile Shunkan - Poignant image of Shunkan, in a tattered robe, lying on the beach looking out to sea, his walking stick and a wooden cup on the sand next to him. Shunkan, Naritsune, and Yasuyori were exiled to the island of Kikai for plotting against the Taira leader, Kiyomori. After three years, a ship arrived to pardon Naritsune and Yasuyori, but not Shunkan, who remains behind, watching as the tiny ship on the horizon makes its way to the mainland without him. Waves crash against the shore and gulls flutter overhead. Beautifully drawn with delicate line work and soft color. Includes delicate cloth embossing on the gray robe.
