The Meiji emperor reviews troops at the Aoyama Parade Grounds in Tokyo. Prints describing events such as this were commissioned to bring attention to the modernization of Japan’s military and encourage patriotic support of imperialist ambitions. Inoue Yasuji, who died at the age of twenty-five shortly after the publication of this work, was a prolific follower of Kobayashi Kiyochika
