Nature, why engage? A poem by Paul Connor

'So what does Nature offer and why should you engage,

Why should you cease doing 'fun things' and turn over a new page.

How could it possibly benefit you to turn your back on the technology of the day?

To re-immerse yourself within the outdoors in an old fashioned way.  

'Will the environment improve if the human species decide to become involved?

Are species evolution, climate change and woodland depletion, problems to be solved?

These do not interest me here, not the focus of my interest, intention or concern,

But what Nature can offer human beings vastly outweighs what She gets in return.'  

'Nature is Harsh and Honest and Humble and without prejudice or shame,

Unforgiving and Instinctual and Unrelenting and without personal agendas or name,

Nature and the myriad of species do not possess Ego or need rules and regulations to apply,

But live in the present from the moment of birth till the moment they die.'  

'Nature provides peacefulness, sanctity and refuge from the day to day stresses and strife,

Showcasing extraordinary sights, sounds and smells through its abundance of life,

Nature expresses its magnificence and frailties, with equal measure of pleasure and pain,

Providing unique and transcendental experiences that reciprocants are at a loss to explain.'  

'Focus on any species and marvel at the achieved feats, within the environment it fills,

Fourteen billion years that create a unique set of evolutionary skills,

To fly, swim and climb proficiently are tasks that we seem unable to perform,

Yet other species excel at these, amongst others, which seems to be the un-natural norm'.  

'Within 'Ten miles of your House' there will be wonders and challenges to behold,

Walk, bike, drive or run to your destination and allow personal memories to unfold,

Turn your back on created technology, other people’s lives and open your eyes, ears and heart,

And experience the magnificence of Nature of which human beings are a part.'

 

'If you walk within Nature and allow your senses and imagination to run free,

There is no limit to your capabilities, what can be achieved and the person you could be.

Mind and body improve dramatically as well as the knowledge and perspective you gain,

Renewed respect for the planet, all species and the privilege that you can attain'.

  'So what breath-taking moments, memories and marvels can you expect to view?

That depends on your enthusiasm, intent and commitment and is simply down to you,

The wonders and wonderment of Nature are ready and waiting for you to explore.

And remember, everything you experience will never occur again or has never occurred before.'
